Wright declines nomination for Student Council Chair

May 5, 2008 · 9 Comments

No one else has put any serious thought into becoming chair and thus the decision on the new chair is going to be pushed back to the June meeting. Smathers shakes head in disbelief, he looks like he wants to cry. What kind of people have we elected if no one even wants to step up and take a leadership role?

This just adds another reason to the list of reasons to move to a presidential system.

Discussion turns to an interim chair. Wrights says he wouldn’t be opposed to being the interim chair, but some members would rather see someone step up in more of a transitional role. Someone who would be potentially considering taking the chair on a longterm basis. More updates to come when the situation is resolved.

[Edit @ 8:02] Discussion of Wright being interim chair seems to have cheered Smathers up. He no longer looks like he needs a hug.

[Edit @ 8:08] They decide to have vice chair Hannah Karns fill in the duties of the chair person for the entire summer and thus vote to table the appointment of the chair.

[Edit @ 8:17] The discussion of the chair position has ended. Smathers and Gerald Cox have left the room, presumably to discuss the happenings and plot the BH opinion section strategy for tomorrow.

[Edit @ 8:32] Discussion has turned to a Jessica Pavlic proposition about the creation of the press office and the altering/replacement of the Campus Relations chair.

[Edit @ 8:56] The consensus on the press shop seems to be that it should be 5 people: a director, assistant director and then 3 positions. What scares me is that a significant number of people seem to think that those 3 people will be willing to work for free and that only the 2 “officer” positions should be paid. T

[Edit @ 9:05] The discussion has moved more towards giving the 3 additional members of the press office a stipend, but not an hourly pay.

[Edit @ 9:09] Karns tries to table the press office proposal. It feeds into the anti-reform image that she’s starting to build. The other members of council seem pretty resolved to pass something tonight though.

[Edit @ 9:18] They are discussing the mandates of the press office as far as communication with the media. I just wonder what they mean by media. Namely, are blogs considered part of the media? Things such as answering questions of bloggers and commenting on blogs ought to be part of the prescribed duties of the press office. (To make a really obscure reference that the vast majority of you won’t understand: This just proves that Janda, Berry and Goldman were right all along)

[Edit @ 9:28] They are recessing for 10 minutes after passing the press office bylaw. I have other things to take care of and am going to leave. More commentary to come later tonight or early tomorrow. Stay tuned.
